چکیده

Mars atmospheric characterization is critical for exploring the planet. Future Mars missions require landing massive payloads to the surface with high accuracy. The accuracy of entry, descent and landing (EDL) of a payload is a major technical challenge for future Mars missions. Mars EDL depends on atmospheric conditions such as density, wind and dust as well as surface topography. A Mars orbiting 2-μm lidar system is presented in this paper. This advanced lidar is capable of measuring atmospheric pressure and temperature profiles using the most abundant atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) on Mars. In addition Martian winds and surface altimetry can be mapped, independent of background radiation or geographical location. This orbiting lidar is a valuable tool for developing EDL models for future Mars missions.

Phototransistors development and their applications to Lidar

Custom-designed two-micron phototransistors have been developed using Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE), Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) techniques under Laser Risk Reduction Program (LRRP). The devices were characterized in the Detector Characterization Laboratory at NASA Langley Research Center. It appears that the performance of LPEand MBE-grown phot...

Profiling atmospheric water vapor using a fiber laser lidar system.

A compact, lightweight, and efficient fiber laser lidar system has been developed to measure water vapor profiles in the lower atmosphere of Earth or Mars. The line narrowed laser consist of a Tm:germanate fiber pumped by two 792 nm diode arrays. The fiber laser transmits approximately 0.5 mJ Q- switched pulses at 5 Hz and can be tuned to water vapor lines near 1.94 microm with linewidth of app...

Topographic and Atmospheric Pressure Mapping of Mars

Introduction: The topography of Mars remained unknown until the first orbiting spacecraft, since early ground-based observations of Mars displayed only variations due to albedo which correspond to changes in surface composition and texture rather than changes in surface altitude. However a technique was being developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s to determine the Martian topography by mea...

A 3-d Aerosol Profiling Lidar for Planetary Rover Missions

Introduction: Existing remote sensing techniques provide limited information on vertical profiles of dust and cloud distributions in Martian atmosphere. Lidar on PHOENIX mission to Mars demonstrated high vertical resolution aerosol profiling capability [1]. A conceptual study is presented for an advanced 3-D profiling lidar for aerosols and clouds. This instrument will have a form factor suitab...

Effects of Self-Shadowing on Nonconservative Force Modeling for Mars-Orbiting Spacecraft

Modeling improvements of nonconservative forces affectingMars-orbiting spacecraft are presented in this study. Recent high-resolution gravity fields enable the recovery of smaller signals in the radio tracking data, previously obscured bymismodeled gravitational anomalies. In particular, the estimation of the atmospheric drag experienced by the spacecraft benefits from the new forcemodels.More ...
